I liked this book and I kind of want to know what happens next…
But for a novel I’d thought of as young adult, it was surprisingly terrifying! Far more gruesome than I was expecting, with moments of cruelty and torture that really made me wince.

There’s something almost childlike about it too, though…
The fairy-tale atmosphere, the magic and the discovery of another world reminded me a little of the first Harry Potter. There’s that same sense of stepping into something extraordinary, even when the danger is very real.
It made me wonder whether, like Harry Potter, the story will become more complex, harrowing and adult as the series progresses. An addictive, unexpectedly unsettling read. I’ll definitely be picking up the next one!
